THE TRANS CANADA HIGHWAY, ONE STONE ON TOP OF TWO.  DRY STONE WALLING ART INSTALLATION.

 MISSION

To build Dry Stone Walls/Structures (referred to as Installations) along the length of the Trans Canada Highway.

 WHO

Private individuals, Institutions, Religious Groups, Corporations, Businesses or Charities.  Anyone who has property within site of the Trans Canada Highway.  The idea being that anyone who drives the highway can see and identify the Installations.

 WHERE

The Installations can be part of a property boundary or just a free standing feature of a garden or any piece of land, as long as visible from the Highway.

 WHAT

The CAIRN Installation would be approximately 8ft high with a 4ft diameter base tapering to a 2ft diameter top.  It would be capped off with a 2” to 3” thick sandstone stone slab.  A milestone would be incorporated into the Cairn.

 The WALL Installation

If Granite fieldstone or similar shaped limestone is used the Installation would be approximately 10 yards long with a base of between 3ft – 4ft wide tapering to approximately 2ft wide at the top and 3ft high.

If Flag Rock or Ledgerock is used the Installation could be 10 yards long with a base of 30” tapering to approximately 14” at the top and 4ft high.

Each Installation would be built within a 2 week period and this would be the main factor in determining the dimensions of the Installations.  A milestone would be incorporated into the wall.

 TYPE OF STONE

The idea is to use as local a stone as possible as long as it is suitable for the Dry Installations.  There could be enough stone on the property itself to build the Installations and if local stone can be used it eliminates excessive transportation making the project more environmentally sound and cost effective.

The type of stone will also determine the type of Installation to be built.  Granite fieldstone cannot be used in round or curved walls as the structural integrity is compromised, the one exception being a concave retaining wall.  The concave shape actually improves structural integrity.  The flatter flag rock/ledgerock type stone is more versatile and can be used to create sharper curves or the round Cairn but is also very effective in a straight section of wall.

 WHY TAKE PART?

Dry Stone Walls have been used for centuries.  To be part of an art project that will still be standing in many years to come
